Organized crime gangs are plundering Bulgaria’s history. Every year artifacts worth 30 million euros are smuggled out of the country illegally. Historians say the sheer scale of the thefts is a disaster for the world’s cultural heritage.
Perperikon is Bulgaria’s biggest and most important archaeological site, home to unique artifacts from the Bronze Age to medieval times. Official digs, however, are increasingly becoming a race against the export racketeers.
